The Importance of Call To Action Buttons on a Website

Once you get a visitor to your website, as a business owner you have one goal. Get them to perform an action. A lot of business owners make the same mistake with their website. They think the best thing for their potential customer or client is to provide them with loads of information. You are right to assume that your visitors will want to know more about your business, but more than anything they will want to know this information within the first 5 seconds on the website. What do they want next? To be told what to do next.

This is where it is extremely crucial to have a very specific call to action button clearly on your website. Call to action buttons on a website speak is defined as a term used for elements in a web page that solicit an action from the user. Whether your goal is to get a visitor to make a purchase, provide you with information for a lead or have them pick up the phone and call you, you need to make this clear as day. If the visitor has to search around your website to decide what to do next, they are going to just leave. This is missed business opportunity at its worst.

If you are working with a web designer, they should have templates available for you to review that have been conversion optimized.  But there are a few key points you should make sure your website is following to ensure it has the best opportunity to capture the visitors to your website.

  1. Phone number: This is crucial! If you have a business number that potential customers can call, it should be posted clearly at the top right hand side of the website. Users of the internet have come to expect this as the place where a phone number will be. If it’s not there and they want to call, they will bounce from your website.
  1. Short contact us form: Emphasis on short form for visitors to fill out requesting their name, phone number and e-mail address. It must be short and have an effective “submit” button. The button must be appealing. Simply having a box saying “submit” is an amateur mistake. It has to be enticing “get a free quote” would be a much better option. It explains what they get by submitting the form and mentions that it’s free!
  1. Information: Maybe your clientele will want more information from you. But you want their information. So trade! Offer a white paper or some other valuable information, but ask for their name and e-mail in return. Using the call to action “download now” as a button on the website is very effective when going with this method.

The best way to make sure you have the best possible chance to capture the potential leads on the website is to have all of the above. Give the visitors the answers they are looking for right off the get-go, and then tell them what they should be doing next (without being too forward about it!).
